What are "Bookmarks"?
For those not familiar with Netscape and its offspring browsers (Mozilla, Firefox, etc.), bookmarks are the equivalent to what Internet Explorer calls "Favorites". They are a way to save your favorite websites so they are easily accessible anytime in the future.
What is a "Bookmarks File"?
Most Netscape/Mozilla-compatible browsers have the ability to import/export all of your bookmarks to a "specially" formatted HTML file (Internet Explorer can also import/export files of this type). By default the browser names this file "bookmarks.html". This is what we are referring to when we say "bookmark(s) file". If you view one of these files in a text editor the first line should be: "<!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1>". This is the type of file that Firesort has the ability to sort.
Will Firesort keep my bookmark folder hierarchy intact?
Yes, Firesort alphabetically sorts your bookmark folders and also keeps their hierarchy (i.e. folders within other folders) intact.
Do I have to run Firesort every time I want to sort my bookmarks?
Unfortunately, yes (though this can be automated with a shell script). Firesort will remember where your bookmarks.html file is located, so using Firesort generally only involves a few clicks of your mouse. Also, remember to quit your browser before you sort, otherwise it won't take effect.
What license is Firesort distributed under?
Firesort is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License Version 2. Get the source code.
